The Tigers, starting faster, held first place for more than half the season, until the Yankees finally caught up in late July. The surprising Tigers and the perennial champion Yankees met in a climactic three-game series at Yankee Stadium on September 1-3. The Bronx Bombers swept all three contests and went on to win the pennant for the eleventh time in thirteen seasons.

The 18 games the Tigers and Yankees played against each other were some of the most exciting of the year. The Yankee's saga has been often told, but except for biographies of Al Kaline and Norm Cash, the Tiger's tale has not been chronicled. Baseball Fans were captivated by the home run duel between Roger Maris, who finished with a record 61, and Mickey Mantle, who hit a personal-best 54 homers.

Tiger fans also thrived on outstanding performances, including by Norm Cash, who led the league with a .361 average, and Rocky Colavito, who hit 45 home runs.
