The pictures have been taken by leading photographers who know London well, so well in fact that some pictures may be unfamiliar to many Londoners, while others show well-known landmarks against unfamiliar backgrounds, as skylines that have remained basically unaltered for hundreds of years suddenly change, and Wren spires are dwarfed by concrete towers and blocks of offices.

The pictures have been arranged in a sequence that can be followed by a visitor, starting at the Law Courts with that great autumn pageant, the Lord Mayor's Show, and continuing with Lincoln's Inn, the National Gallery and Trafalgar Square, with its illuminated Christmas tree. Interesting interior shots show the Countess of Sussex's tomb in Westminster Abbey, the Painted Hall of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and those two ancient City landmarks, the Mansion House and Guildhall. Lesser known parts of London are the quiet Church Walk in Kensington and the peaceful @postman's Park', near the London General Post Office; London pubs - worthy of a picture book to themselves - are represented by the historic galleried George at Southwark and the Blue Anchor at Hammersmith.

Modern London in the shape of the Hilton Hotel and Portland House contrasts with the old-world atmosphere of Boodle's Club in St James's overshadowed though it is by vast new office buildings, while 'rural' London is also captured; Carlton House Terrace, Ken Wood, St Mary-le-Bow, Chiswick House - these all bear that unmistakeable stamp of civilization that is so much a part of London, and which turns up in such unexpected places, like the roof garden high about Kensington High Street. This book presents forty-five photographs of London, showing some of the many moods of this great city, which has aroused both love and hatred, although few will disagree with the words of Thomas Moore: 'Go where we may, rest where we will, Eternal London haunts us still.'
