Although an inanimate object it ‘'witnesses'' great change during the years covered by our story. From a world where life is much slower and where the horse and cart reign to a world which has lived through two great wars and an explosion of technological and medical advances and where speed seems to govern all needs. The novel tells the stories of all those who have owned and known it over that time, describing their pleasures, joys, sorrows and troubles.

The story also reflects the ways in which the world and the attitudes of the people living in it have changed and developed over time. Most writers are advised to write about what they know meaning that fiction usually contains elements and experiences drawn from its creator's own life. This is true in this novel because although all of the characters are completely fictional, existing only in my imagination, I have partly drawn upon the experiences of my own mother who like Joan was a WVS volunteer during the 1939-1945 war and undertook many of the hazardous duties we witness Joan doing.

The story also pays homage to my home city of Plymouth and its people who showed such stoicism during that time. Historians now say that Plymouth was one of the worst bombed cities in the country, but this is rarely mentioned in documentaries which tend to cite London, Liverpool and Coventry blitzes only. Other interesting parallels are that during the war my mother too often visited good friends on their farm in Cornwall and that family lore tells the story of my mother's deaf and dumb cousin who experienced being blown down the street by a bomb and whose hair is reputed to have turned from almost black to snow white in that instant.
