Young professional Jessi Carpenter is nursing a broken heart when Talan, posing as Doctor Ashari, comes into her life and sweeps her off her feet with Old World flattery and irresistible charm. Jessi thinks she's found a pleasurable distraction from her pain. Talan thinks she's taken a new captive, to be used and then disposed of, as her past lovers have been.
But something about Jessi is different, and Talan finds herself vulnerable in a way she hasn't been since her long-forgotten days as a human being. After her feelings for Jessi catapult her back into memories she'd forced herself to forget, Talan has to make an agonizing decision. Tom leaned over and spoke urgently into her ear.
"Jessi, please. Please listen to me. She doesn't want to hurt you.
If you drink her blood, it gives your own blood a scent that makes it unappealing to her". "You're serious", Jessi quavered. "You really do think she's a vampire".
"Jessi, please. Just trust me. Drink.
We can talk later". He lowered his voice to a whisper. "This is the only thing you can do to protect yourself right now".
Jessi's head was spinning. If that really was blood... "Talan, please don't make me do this.
I'll stay. I won't make any more trouble. Just please don't make me drink that".
Talan's face was grave. "Jessi, you must drink this. If you will not believe me, then at least believe Tom.
He is trying to help you. He is not lying to you. I am indeed what you would call a vampire".
Her scarlet lips parted and she showed her fangs. "These are real. Jessi, think.
Think about the things you have witnessed. Think about those two animals who were going to violate you. Have you not wondered what I did to them?" Jessi nodded miserably and covered her face with her hands.
She swayed on her feet. Tom steadied her. "It's all right", he whispered.
"It's going to be all right". No, it wasn't. It was never going to be all right again.
Talan spoke gently. "You are very tempting and desirable, as a woman. If you do not want to tempt me in more dangerous ways, ways that could cost you your life, you will drink".
"Do as she says, Jessi", said Tom. He squeezed her shoulders. "Please".
Slowly, Jessi lowered her hands. She looked from Talan to Tom and back again. "I don't think I can", she whispered.
"I think I'm going to vomit". "You won't", said Tom. "I can't drink blood".
It was a moan. "You can, little one". Talan held the cup to Jessi's lips.
Jessi shuddered and closed her eyes, trying not to breathe. "Open your mouth, little flame". She had no choice, did she?
Swallowing hard against the bile rising in her throat, Jessi opened her mouth. She felt the coolness of the cup against her lips, and then the coolness of the liquid within. And then that liquid was slowly coming into her mouth, and it was wine and spice and fruit and chocolate and everything good she had ever tasted, and she drank.
She drank willingly, then she drank eagerly, and then the cup was empty and she was standing there in a daze of pleasure, not thinking at all. As if in a dream, from far away, she heard Talan's voice saying, "Good, Jessi", and Tom's saying "See? That wasn't so bad, was it?"
