Picture Bride introduces you to the major historical Hawaiian characters struggling to leading America and Japan to war and traumatic events that forged loyal Americans from the daughters of Japan's empire. 1905-1941  – Japan and Hawaii – From the moment we meet Haru, we fall in love with this lovely woman made of silk and steel. We despair for her as she contemplates suicide rather than be sold into prostitution, cheer for her as she finds refuge with a Buddhist priest and his wife in Hiroshima and then through her teenage eyes witness the ascendant emperor-worshiping Shintoism giving rise to Japan's military caste.

Betrayed by her best friend, Haru flees to Hawaii as a picture bride. We share her frustration attempting to overcome her husband's stubbornness to maintain his Japanese language school curriculum that incites doubts of Japanese loyalty. We struggle with Haru the "mayor" of her temple sugar cane strike village coping with the Spanish Flu, feel her pain of 1924 immigration humiliation, and in the early 30's read Haru's oldest son editorial war with power structure's newspaper trying to make sense of the Massie trials and the murder of a falsely accused Japanese laborer that rips the racial veneer of Hawaii asunder.

In the lead up to the war, we share Haru's pride in her oldest son as we discover the behind the scenes preparations that will prevent Japanese in Hawaii being interned. We meet her daughter who becomes an au pair in the home of the FBI agent assigned to prepare the internment of all Japanese in Hawaii when the expected war breaks out and how she led the agent to ignore Hoover's orders.
