A few years ago, he wouldn't have believed that he could be this happy-or accepted. But to do this story justice means starting at the beginning. Tomas is born in the 1950s Midwest to conservative parents.

He's subjected to a typical childhood, feeling anything but typical. As he grows, so does the realization that this life-sports, girlfriends, church on Sundays-won't satisfy him at his core. Thus begins his search for who he is-a search that will take him first to college and then on a hitchhiking tour of Europe.

Each stop strengthens his resolve to find men like him, to experience things he has only dreamed about, and to become more aware of the plight of others. When he meets Marco, everything culminates in a new life that seems too good to be true: loving and learning from an older man, living in beautiful Portugal, and partaking in a revolution destined to change a country. Basing Tomas's journey in part on his own European tour in 1970, David Marty tells a tale of personal triumph in a time when being gay is anything but easy.
