This book describes in detail an experiment conducted in eighth-grade classrooms in Singapore over six weeks. During this time, four classes were conducted with the Group Investigation method (groups of 4-5 students cooperate on a collective project). Three classes were taught with the traditional Whole-Class method (mainly teacher-student interaction; students work individually).

As the Group Investigation method had not been employed previously in Singapore (nor does teacher's academic education prepare them to employ this method), this experiment clearly reveals the degree of student resistance to instructional innovations. The Students Studying under the Group Investigation method became anxious and insecure and expressed considerable skepticism about their chances for academic success. The background for this complex study, the way that it was implemented, the various ways used to assess the results, and a thorough discussion of the findings in this book will help educationists formulate the proper implementation of innovative teaching methods such as Group Investigation accompanied simultaneously by appropriate changes in the school's expectations for student learning and social behavior in classrooms.

In this way, the authors hope to help readers accomplish genuine change in classroom teaching so that students can ultimately derive even more significant benefits from their school experience than they do now.
