When the p Emily I was born in a tenement house, to a musical mother. All I ever wanted to do was be a singer and one day I got the chance. I found a job as a chorus girl in the Adelphi Theater.

Then disaster struck. An old lady I held very dear died and the director of the play I was singing in began to bully me. I had to put up with it, I was poor and had no other means.

When the play closed, I became a cleaner. There was one wealthy man who wanted to help me. He was handsome and I thought the world of him, but it would never have worked.

Society would never have allowed a chorus girl and an Earl to be together. Matthew - Earl of Rothmede I remember the evening I went to the Adelphi Theater to see a performance of a new play. The play was awful but I fell in love with one of the ladies in the chorus.

I'd never spoken to her in my life, but that evening I fell in love with her. I can't describe how beautiful she was. Graceful, wonderfully feminine, a lovely sense of humour are all words I can use to describe her.

When we met I knew I wanted her. I wanted her more than anything ever before. But she rejected me.

Perhaps I wasn't handsome enough for her, perhaps she was intimidated by my social standing. I don't know, but it hurt. The woman of my dreams slipped through my fingers like dry sand in a desert storm and I hated it.

But, I wasn't giving up so easily.
